The Life of the Somali People in Two Continents

Challenges, Achievements, and Conduct

Osman Dirie Egal

A father's account of Somali life in the homeland and the new lives Somali families have built in North America: a record of remarkable resilience and an appeal for honest reflection.

About the Book

A community between two worlds

What happens when a community crosses from its ancestral homeland into another continent while carrying its faith, culture, memories, and aspirations?

The Life of the Somali People in Two Continents offers a thoughtful account of Somali life in the homeland and the new lives Somali families have built in North America. It connects the pastoral traditions, customary gatherings, marriage practices, mutual assistance, and inherited wisdom of earlier generations with the realities of contemporary life in the diaspora. The book explores the establishment of mosques and community institutions, the indispensable contribution of Somali women, education, economic advancement, parenting, and the continuing effort to preserve faith and identity. It also confronts difficult questions: the widening distance between parents and children, cultural assimilation, youth vulnerability, family conflict, divorce, clan division, and the influence of technology and social media.

Grounded in lived experience and close community observation, this is both a record of remarkable resilience and an appeal for honest reflection. It calls for knowledge, unity, responsible leadership, and a future in which Somali generations can draw strength from their heritage while confidently navigating the societies in which they now live.
